Where to Digital Nomad in Egypt

Dahab

Surprise, surprise… we meant to stay in Dahab for a week for a little Red Sea vacation and ended up staying several months… And we’re not the only ones.

Dahab is a little paradise on the Sinai peninsula, and much needed reprieve if you spent any time in Cairo or Luxor. And unlike it’s resort-heavy neighbor, Sharm El-Sheikh, Dahab is a place you can actually make your home.

It is extremely popular among scuba divers, free divers, and backpackers as the Red Sea has famously vibrant underwater ecosystems and incredible visibility. And for much of the year, the water is pretty warm.

One positive (and negative) is that Dahab is a very authentic, no-frills Sinai town, meaning the WIFI is not great, goats and cats roam the streets, and the hot water doesn’t last very long.

Despite the mediocre WIFI, Dahab attracts tons of digital nomads, as well as people ‘working on vacation’. It’s an incredible place to call your temporary home and I’ve loved the daily routines we’ve made here.

For tips about coworking in Dahab, read this!

Pros of being a digital nomad in Dahab:

  • Dahab has a low cost of living compared to most other digital nomad hotspots. Accommodation, food, transportation, and daily expenses are very affordable, allowing you to stretch your budget further.
  • You can try a range of outdoor activities such as snorkeling, diving, windsurfing, hiking, and camel trekking, providing a perfect balance between work and fun.
  • The slower pace of life and welcoming local community create a calm and stress-free environment, ideal for focusing on work and personal well-being.
  • Dahab is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, with beautiful beaches, clear waters, and majestic mountains.
  • There is a vibrant expat community, including digital nomads, entrepreneurs, artists, and travelers from around the world.

Cons of being a digital nomad in Dahab:

  • While Dahab offers the basics needed for a comfortable digital nomad lifestyle, it lacks some advanced infrastructure and services found in larger cities. Internet connectivity and power outages are frustrating challenges, requiring backup solutions or adaptability.
  • Dahab is situated in a relatively remote area of Egypt, far from major urban centers. This can result in longer travel times if you need to access larger cities, international airports, or other destinations for personal or professional reasons.

Things to Do in Dahab

Dahab may be a small town, but it is big on things to do, from relaxing afternoons to high adventure and everything in between. Here are the top activities in Dahab:

Just north of Hurghada on the east coast of mainland Egypt, is a little town called El Gouna that is making a name for itself as a digital nomad and expat destination.

Cairo

I really had a hard time deciding if Cairo should be on the list of cities to digital nomad in Egypt, or where to avoid.

Personally, I would not want to digital nomad in Cairo; it’s a giant city which isn’t really my vibe.

However, I met many people who loved Cairo during our several months in Egypt, which is why I’ve decided to add it to the list. For full transparency, I will include all the pros and cons so you can decide for yourself.

Pros of being a digital nomad in Cairo:

No one said Cairo wasn’t fun. There are tons of activities and things to do, you definitely wont be bored. From the most iconic destination in the world (the Pyramids) to river boat dinners to legendary museums to bars and clubs to– you get the idea.

If my glowing review has convinced you, learn which are the best areas for digital nomads living in Cairo.

Pros of being a digital nomad in Cairo:

  • The air pollution in Cairo notoriously awful. The AQI Level was 138 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups) when we were visiting and I was experiencing severe allergies, congestion, and a cough that lingered even after we left.
  • It is also not pedestrian friendly and the traffic is dreadful. Similar to LA, Cairo is very spread out so walking from place to place isn’t usually viable. Driving in Cairo is an extreme sport and I do not envy anyone who tries.
  • The vibe is Cairo is very stressful and in the tourist areas, you will be heckled, asked for money, or swindled. However, I will say it did not seem as bad as Morocco.

Obviously if you’re in Egypt, you have to visit Cairo at least for a little bit. It’s a right of passage. But you really only need 2-3 days maximum to see all the iconic sites, and then I would go literally anywhere else.

Where NOT to Digital Nomad in Egypt

Luxor

Karnak Temple Complex ruins in Luxor with palm trees
Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor

Luxor is a must-visit when spending any time in Egypt, especially as part of a legendary Nile River cruise. But I would not want to digital nomad here for an extended amount of time. It is very touristy, and attracts a lot of people who want to take advantage of tourists.

Every time you walk outside, people are constantly bombarding you, trying to get you to eat at their restaurant or look in their shop. It’s just a lot, especially if you’re just trying to chill and walk around.

Luxor tends to be much hotter than other parts of Egypt too. So depending on the time of year, you may prefer to spend your time in Luxor inside with the AC blasting instead of outside with the crowds and ruins.

Things to do in Luxor

Luxor is one of the most iconic cities in Egypt. It is brimming with historic sites and ancient ruins. Although I don’t recommend staying here for too long, here are some things you can’t miss:

Aswan

boats on the nile river
The Nile River in Aswan

Similar to Luxor, I highly recommend visiting Aswan. And it’s the starting point for most Nile River cruises. But I wouldn’t choose to stay here more than a few days.

Compared with most other touristic places in Egypt, Aswan is actually pretty chill. But in my experience the internet was not reliable at all, assuming you could find it in the first place.

And although you wont be pestered the same way as in Luxor, for example, it is still a city heavily reliant on tourism. Most people coming into town stay for a couple night maximum before moving on.

Things to do in Aswan

Although not as famous as Luxor, Aswan is a must-visit when in Cairo. It may not warrant a long visit, but Aswan still has a lot to offer:
